A social enterprise that was set up in April 2000 by members of the local community to address the social, environmental and economic needs within the Garw Valley. The Garw Valley is an area of outstanding natural beauty in South Wales, but it has suffered from the decline of the coal industry and the closure of the coal mines in the 1980s.
Blaengarw, the town situated at the top end of the Garw Valley, is a very strong community but has very high levels of deprivation and ill health. In order to kickstart the redevelopment of the local community, Creation has developed and built a series of social enterprises, projects and events that have made regeneration a reality for this ex-mining town.
The trust is a social enterprise and a community development project rolled into one successful and creative organisation.
Mission: To play an important role in supporting and assisting local communities in their revitalisation to become prosperous, healthy and sustainable places to live, work and visit.
Rationale: We are in the regeneration business, and by working flexibly and being accessible, we will play an important role in supporting and assisting local communities in helping to meet their aspirations of becoming prosperous, healthy and sustainable places to live, work and visit.
Our values are:
History: Creation Development Trust was set up by local people to address social, environmental and economic needs within the communities of the Garw Valley. Communities that are amongst the most deprived in the Bridgend County Borough.
Creation was established in April 2000 and is presently structured as a not-for-profit company limited by guarantee (company number 3998232). The Trust is registered as a charity (number 1091527) and a Development Trust. A Board of Trustees manages Creation in a voluntary capacity.
Creation manages Blaengarw Workmen's Hall as an arts and community venue for the benefit of the local community, on behalf of Bridgend County Borough Council.
Out of school childcare was established in 2000 with a generous grant from the New Opportunities Fund. A training room was established with funding from Lloyds TSB and the Welsh Church Act Fund. Lloyds TSB has since donated a further significant sum towards the employment of a Finance Manager. Additional funding has been secured from Awards For All for building improvements, the Coalfields Regeneration Trust for additional equipment and resources and the Welsh Assembly Government to cover equipment and 3 years funding for the employment of a Community Liaison Officer.
Thanks largely to these funders and the commitment and determination of all the individuals involved, Blaengarw Workmen’s Hall is now well on its way to becoming a commercially viable, self-sustainable centre for the people of the Garw Valley.
